Abey Mokgwatsane is the CEO of Ogilvy & Mather South Africa, one of the country’s leading communication services company. He began his career as a marketing intern at VWV, South Africa’s leading experiential agency, while studying marketing at The University of the Witwatersrand.
Upon graduation, he joined VWV fulltime as its Marketing Manager. Then in 2001, he joined the South African Breweries (SAB) marketing team where he worked on Castle Lager as Brand Manager for Castle Loud – a young adult, 360-degree brand activation property.
In 2003 he spearheaded the launch of Miller Genuine Draft into the South African market. While at SAB, Abey was the recipient of three Managing Directors Awards for marketing excellence.
In 2005, Abey and two partners acquired a majority stake in the VWV Group. For two years he served as Group Marketing and Sales Director for the company before being appointed Group Chief Executive in 2007.
Under his leadership, VWV produced the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The company received positive recognition in South Africa and abroad, including a 2010 Loerie Grand Prix and a Special Achievement Award from Finweek’s AdReview. In addition, the company was named Financial Mail’s Specialist Agency of the Year.
Abey is a founding member of Young Business for South Africa (YBSA), a 14-year-old networking organisation for young professionals that aims to develop South Africa’s future leadership.
He was also named one of South Africa’s top 200 young leaders by the Mail & Guardian Top Leaders Programme in 2011. Abey also writes and lectures on marketing, leadership and entrepreneurship.
